Lipton: the Pioneer of Innovation in Tea Market

Tea is one of the most loved beverages around the world and Lipton, a brand of tea belonging to Unilever, is one of the most consumed tea brands in almost all nations across the globe.

The Story of Lipton

Thomas Lipton was a Scottish entrepreneur born in 1850 in a typical respectable working class family. After discontinuing many jobs, he eventually opened his first shop at 101 Stobcross Street in Glasgow, which soon became popular in the street.

It has been said that he lived, worked and breathed his shop. He used to work for 18 hours in a day and often used to makeshift bed under the counter. His shop worked so well that he soon shifted to larger premises at high street in Glasgow.

Later he opened shops in Paisley Road, Anderston and Robertson Lane by 1876. By 1882 he had shops in Dundee, Paisley, Edinburgh and Leeds. He became a rich, well known and successful man by 1890, after which he was attracted towards tea industry.

At that time, tea was much popular among people, but it was prohibited for the average working class family for being too expensive to afford. Thomas Lipton decided that he would make tea accessible to all at reasonable prices guaranteed quality. It was Thomas Lipton before whom tea was beverage for rich only. He acquired tea estates in Ceylon (presently in Sri Lanka) and managed to get packaging and transportation at the most economical cost. Eventually, the Thomas J. Lipton Co., a tea packing company was established in 1893.

Today Lipton is a part of the Unilever global consortium. Lipton Yellow label is a leading tea brand, which is sold in around 150 countries worldwide. The company is continuing its legacy and putting its constant afford to make the best quality tea accessible to people of all classes.
