The Story of

Thomas Lipton was a Scottish
entrepreneur born in 1850 in a typical respectable working class family. After
discontinuing many jobs, he eventually opened his first shop at 101 Stobcross
Street in Glasgow, which soon became
popular in the street.
It has
been said that he lived, worked and breathed his shop. He used to work for 18 hours in a day and
often used to makeshift bed under the counter. His shop worked so well that he
soon shifted to larger premises at high street in Glasgow.
Later he opened shops in Paisley
Road, Anderston and Robertson Lane by 1876. By 1882 he had shops in Dundee,
Paisley, Edinburgh and Leeds. He became a rich, well known and successful man
by 1890, after which he was attracted towards tea industry.
At that time, tea was much popular
among people, but it was prohibited for the average working class family for
being too expensive to afford. Thomas Lipton decided that he would make tea
accessible to all at reasonable prices guaranteed quality. It was Thomas Lipton
before whom tea was beverage for rich only. He acquired tea estates in Ceylon
(presently in Sri Lanka) and managed to get packaging and transportation at the
most economical cost. Eventually, the Thomas J. Lipton Co., a tea packing
company was established in 1893.
